As I mentioned in a previous post, I find that New Year is full of optimism and fresh hope. I always make a point of starting a new year with a run, no matter how big or small – today was very small but nonetheless brilliant.
What a great way to start the new year it was too. It feels so satisfying to be out and active, shaking off the indulgences of the last week and starting as I mean to go on. Sharing some quality time in the fresh air amongst nature, my pace was given an extra spring when couples and families wished me a ‘Happy New Year’ as I passed and I was struck by how carefree the wildlife was as I saw 2 squirrels dancing around a tree trunk.
There really is no better way to lift the spirits than to go for a run. The endorphins course through your veins replacing any of life’s stresses, my mind focuses on what I’m partaking in, squeezing out any other burdens and I feel that the outdoors frees me from the shackles of the everyday.
I’ve never felt this more than on my run this morning. After a poor year of running with so much uncertainty in the world, lockdowns, various and changing restrictions and a bout of Covid of my own, this morning’s run reminded me of what’s important and what I need to focus on for the year ahead. It’s essential to do everything I can to have a healthy new year and that starts with running. Here’s to a Healthy New Year to you too!
